When/if that day comes, manufacturers will develop new technologies to replace the current ones. Optical based chips would be my guess.

People will be farmed and their minds linked up. The resulting neural network will be rather large and pretty much transcendent. The power of this huge biological computer could be accessed by (comparatively) simple terminals - although there wouldn't be much point to this as it would be far more logical for everyone to be wired up to the single consciousness.

The world will end! There will always be a way to make more powerful computer chips ... it's evolution.

I think I saw summut on telly recently that said that atomic level computing was the limit - you can't get smaller than an atom of course. They reckon they were going to get there in under 20 years. The point of getting smaller is that you get faster - there's less distance to travel for information, plus more "stuff" to store it in. Does it really matter how fast a computer tells you "an exception has occurred, would you like to send an error report to microsoft?" he he he!

Computer chips are still being developed to be increasingly powerful, and it seems that they haven't met that stage yet. There is current research on 'quantum comptuers' but don't get your hopes up for a consumer-ready one during your lifetime. Click on the link in the sources sections for some interesting videos giving an insight into the computer chips and its engineers.
Have a happy new year!

It is hard to predict but energy from light and the photon has many future applications on computer tech.
Also there is always something to play with in the frequency spectrum this is just beginning; guess what thought are faster than any processor we have right now and thoughts are a combination of chemical plus organic electric impulses so i guess that in the near future computers will have the capacity to upgrade themselves without human intervention for it. They will be able to learn by their own and they will have the immense computing capacity they posses or greater than we will might not know because we will be fertilizing the ground by then. in 20 years from now I will be death and happy

You'd be amazed how much more growth we have ahead in terms of Processor speed and capacity. I don't think you have to worry anytime soon about running out of improvements.
Once the technology we are currently reliant on is 'at it's limits' then we'll see progression into bio engineered chips that use organic compounds to handle processing duties. It may sound a little 'Star Trek' but if you think of the data stored a t a cellular level it makes perfect sense to go this way.
32Ghz single core bio chip anyone?

Just like they couldn't imagine a cell phone being smaller...or a device that holds 4,000 songs that is smaller than a Credit card(ipod)...where there's a will there's always a way! it wont happen
