My understanding regarding scans done in your doctor's office is that they are very limited. The doctor scans for fetal size, heart rate, position and fluid levels. An OB does not have the specialized training regarding ultrasound that an ultrasound technologist does. Therefore, your 20 week scan should be done in an imaging department or facility that employs ultrasound technologists to perform the scan and a radiologist to read and interpret the scan.
For a 20 week anatomy scan, where I work, we document these things:
**cervical length, placenta, ammonic fluid levels
**measurements: 2 of the baby's head and 1 each of the abdomen and femur to get an estimated fetal age and weight
**fetal organ survey - urinary bladder, 2 kidneys, stomach bubble, fetal cord insertion, 4 chambered heart, outflow tracts of the heart, diaphragm, aorta and aortic arch, nasal bone, both eye lenses, structures of the brain (posterior fossa, ventricle), the entire fetal spine in two different views or planes, entire lower and upper extremities on both arms/legs
***we document the fetal heart rate
***we document that you have a 3 vessel umbilical cord and do doppler wavelengths on the cord
***maternal gallbladder, as pregnant women have a higher rate of gallstones
***of course, if the mother wishes, we try to determine the fetal sex
Most of the things I have listed have most likely not been evaluated in your OB office scans. The scans are performed with the same method and equipment as you have experienced in your OBs office. But, the full scan will take between 40-50 minutes....that is a lot of stuff to image and document! Best wishes....

I hadan ultra sound at 15 weeks and they asked me if I wanted to know the sex of the baby even tho it wouldn't a be positive identification so early. They told me it looked like a girl so far but my boyfriend and I still talk about it as an it and not a girl just in case. Also, we still have picked out boy and girl names. Now at 23 weeks I am getting another ultra sound and I will trust what they say then a bit more. I won't be comepletly satisfied until the doctor tells me when the baby is born. Good luck!

They are just checking to make sure everything is developing as it should be. Arms, Legs, fingers, toes, spine, brain, heart all of the important stuff. They can catch deformities early now instead of having to wait and finding out when the baby is born.

They are checking the size of the placenta, how much amniotic fluid is around the baby, all of the babies organs (i.e., heart, liver, kidney, bladder, etc.) and signs of any abnormalities. Congrats on a healthy baby!
