I had this trans rebuilt and guy guy sold me a 6 pad converter for a diesel. He said it would bolt up to my 350. I put the trans in mysely as I always do. It ran great for about 400 miles and went out again. I pulled it out and took it back. The pump gear went from the converter "not going in all the way". It also cracked the new flywheel. I put the trans back in with the new flywheel and cheched for endplay on the crank. Per the advise of the rebuilder I had to put washers between the converter and flywheel because of too much space. Other than that everything looked good. I drove it for about 1000 miles and it went out again! Rebuilder insists it's either something I did on the install or that it is my engine. I never had trans problems with the truck before. I did pull the engine to put new heads and to clean, repaint, and regasket it. I did not touch the lower half of the engine. This engine runs great amd strong. Please help!!

If the engine was previously coupled to a standard transmission, then remove the pilot bearing.

Before installing converter in the trans measure the center hub[the piece that fits in the back of the crank] & make sure that the plate that is welded to the hub is not broken or bent. Fit converter to the ring gear - should slide easily in the end of the crank without using any washers.

Remove from flywheel & install in transmission. Turn slightly until it slides into the pump. Install the tranny.

yes it sounds like the convertor is incorrect..
its not going in far enough...or the flexi plate is incorrect...thats why he got you to "pack" it with washers???????????? which would also put undue strain on flex bolts.....damn pity you fitted it ..as it gives him someone to blame...

Mr T gives very good advise..

Diesel converters are not the same as a gas one. check with your local auto parts supplier for the correct one for your set up. I had a Chevy truck with a 350 and a 400 trans with no problems. I do not think we even changed the 400 converter as they are very good.
