BTW Photoshop will use free hard drive space for scratch drive but the install requires no more than around 200MB of space.

Many things to consider...
Realiability, Tech Support, Variety, Performance, etc.

Dell and HP are the 2 Biggies in the industry.
Recently, HP's customer service/Tech support has been getting better ratings then Dell, so some company's are switching over. This type of ebb and flow in the industry has happened before...so I'm sure Dell will rebound in a couple of years.

So how much tech support do you think you need? Depends on your technical knowledge. How much back and forth, put on hold, customer service can you tolerate? If you are impatient, better stick with HP vs. Dell.

Both have great realiability... although you're gonna find individuals who have had bad experiences with both, so don't let 1 or 2 people's bad experience sway ya.

Do any of your friends/family members or jobs use laptops? If so, what are they using? Benefit to getting something similar to what other people you know have, is that they MIGHT be able to give you some free tech support.

If you are using Photoshop, focus on 3 key pieces of hardware. RAM, video card, and Screen size, in that order.

Larger then 15.4 inch LCD screen and it won't be a true LAPTOP anymore as it will probably be too heavy and large to fit comfortably on your lap.

If you are considering Vista -- then 2 Gigs of RAM is minimum especially if you will be running Photoshop

If you don't care about tech support at all, and you like taking chances on Off-brands...
You should check out Sager or Prostar -- http://www.pro-star.com/index.cfm?mainpage=product

Otherwise I'd go with a Dell Inspiron 1520 with 2Gb RAM, atleast a 1.6GHz processor
