Sort them first. Vinegar or copper cleaner will work, but pennies made beginning in 1981 are not copper and only copper coated zinc. Putting them in an acid solution will eat them up-- found that out by accident.

If you have collectable coins, the only approved method that will not devalue them is to make a paste out of baking soda and water and use a soft ( or old) toothbrush. That will remove the crud from the coin without "shining" it. If your coins are really collectible (over $500), I would suggest seeing a numismatist for a professional opinion before touching them at all. I hope this helps you.
