Because only balanced equations describe reality.

Atoms do not appear or disappear in real chemical reactions. You always end up with the exact number of atoms you had initially, and they are always the same kinds of atoms (same atomic numbers).

law of conservation of mass (by Einstein) states that matter cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be made into energy (e=m*c^2)
If the equation is not balanced by mass (or if thats impossible probably some kind of radiation, either alpha beta or gamma) then it is not possible
