I just had my first garbage disposal installed with my new kitchen. My husband is worried it will clog up the septic system. What things are and are not OK to put in it?

Anything that is pretty much in liquid state I think is fine. We had one in our old house and we put potato peelings in there and it messed up.

A renter of ours put pasta in and quit working.

Mother-in-law put egg shells in hers and hers quit working.

So there is three things here that I recommend not putting in: potato peelings, pasta, and egg shells.

There may have been something else in the garbage disposal that caused it to jam up but it sure wasn't the strawberries!! So don't worry about it. Maybe a rock if they were not cleaned or a staple from the box they came in, who knows..... Don't feel bad ya hear... Think about it, you can mash strawberries with the flat part of your hand very easy so how is it going to mess up a unit that is designed to grind things up? It's not!!! Something very hard jammed it, not what you put in.

These machines have been given the wrong name, They are not for garbage, they are for soft foods and little amounts at a time

Septic system companies recomend against garbage disposals because people do tend to think just because they can put stuff through it is ok. You are smart to ask. Anything fiberous is bad. Celery, potato skins etc. Eggshells also bad. Really shouldn't put anything down it that was not food, and even then I scrape plates into the trash before I rinse them in the sink.
