I was wondering because I have a fed drug conviction from 5 yrs ago. I have changed my life considerably, but in trying to find employment have had a really hard time because I am honest about my conv. So, I was told not to tell them about it because most dont even do the federal ck. just wondered if that was true.

It's entirely up to the employer how deeply he wishes to search - the more sources he wants the background check company to look at, the more it will cost.

If he's hiring a janitor he may not do any check at all. If he's hiring a new Vice President of Finance, he may have a full positive vetting done.

Yes.....the option is with the employer. Lie and it could cause you serious problems.....seriously,,,,I still think telling the truth is the best....any employer who doesn't do it....probably has serious problems themselves who you wouldn't want to work for....truth be known.

Some companies are starting to convert to statements like: within the past three years or within the past 5 years--if the date of your conviction was only 1 (one) day past the specified period you do not have to include it in your disclosure: you have legally complied with the requested information, regardless of who the employer is. Never offer any more information than what is specifically requested.

Read each question requesting information very carefully--and answer the question honestly--but, to repeat: give only the information requested.

It all depends on the company and who they hire to do background checks. I've had some that are pretty thorough, and some that really did nothing.
