Ah, you remind me of my lost weekend in Germany.

I was scheduled to go on a vacation when I was serving in the Netherlands. I had to meet the bus in Germany. My friend was supposed to go with me and do the driving, but his plans changed at the last moment so he couldn’t.

I got on the bus and while in Switzerland the driver decided to try and climb into the back of a semi-tractor trailer rig. I woke up with broken glass all over my face (luckily I had put a coat over my head to sleep) and the entire front of the bus was gone. The tour guide had her arm broken and the trip was canceled. I spent a sleepless night, mainly on adrenaline and we were then returned to Frankfurt and I had to drive home.

I got on the autobahn, it was my first time to drive in Germany, and headed north to try and go home. I got lost didn’t realize it until I was in Northern Germany. When I realized it and decided to turn back I went over a curb and got a flat tire. That’s when I found out the jack wouldn’t work. Luckily a friendly German stopped to help me and I was on the road again.

I bought a map and finally made it home, but not after finding out I had gone 500 km out of my way! It was a comedy of errors with a lot of little things contributing to one big disaster. It happens. Since that day I try not to drive anywhere unless I have an adequate map.

I have found that I have a perfect natural sense of direction; rely on it and I will get lost every time. A good deal of that is probably due to my confidence being shaken on that lost weekend in Germany. Hopefully your brother’s lost trip won’t be as traumatic. (Oh did I mention that when I woke my nose was bleeding and just a month before I had to have it cauterized to stop the bleeding; that is another tale for another time with the moral to watch your humidity during winter.)
