We all know when bands evolve they usually get softer.
Can you think of any bands that evolved but got heavier?

I can think of Greeley Estates.

You?

The Donnas started out way early 90s and definitely had the punk vibe going. Speed Demon was mentioned in every other song. But as the years have gone by, no album has sounded the same. Skintight was close to American Teenage Rock N Roll Machine and their first album, but as Turn 21 followed, their sound has changed dramatically, and I love it. Obviously.

Judas Priest. They were a lot more melodic and even tempo'd in the early days. About the time that Hell Bent came out they started to get heavier. British Steel was mammoth, then came Screaming For Vengeance. After that it was all ball busting head banging stuff. One of my favorite bands.

Porcupine Tree
They went from a very Floydesqe prog band to a nearly metal prog band. Their sound is now much heavier. I blame Opeth, since Steven Wilson began producing for Opeth, PT's gotten much heavier, and the opposite's happening to Opeth, they're getting softer and more prog.

Nobody evolved better than Ministry. When they first started out, they were Chicago's own version of Depeche Mode. The rest is history.

REM right after Automatic for the People.

Radiohead also evolve in almost any new album but in their own way.

Of course, Porcupine Tree.
Travis went heavier for one album, but then quit that idea.
You know, i never realised how many go from heavy to not.

Deep Purple has went through many phases and evolutions in their 40 year career between the late 60 to mid 70's that has evolved from "The Book Of Taliesyn" Era neo-classical rock to "Machine Head" Era flat out Metal.
If that's not getting heavier I don't know what is.
