How do I play MAME games with my XBOX controller?

Yes, I have the USB Port, it's all installed with XBCD, Windows recognizes it, and the controller works fine for the ZSNES. But somehow my MAME will not read the XBOX Controller. What do I have to do? I tried Inputting in the actions but nothing happens. I read somewhere where someone vaguely said that you have to copy and paste some XBCD .ini (or something like that) files into the controller folder....I see a "ctrlr" folder in my MAME folder. I guess I have to do something with that. Can anyone help me? I'm new to MAME and all.
