the edges? And is a 5 ft by 3.5 blanket a good size for my 3.5 yr old? her little blanket her great grandmother made her is getting a little small and worn.

That's a good size. She can cuddle up under it.

Layer the top, batting and back to that the batting comes out PAST the edge. After you quilt, or tie, whichever you are planning to do, you then trim back the excess batting and add your binding.

Most batting (quilt batting) tells on the package how far apart you must secure it to keep it from tearing inside or moving. Cotton batting is usually about every 3 inches, polyester is usually every 5 inches or so. You can secure it by pulling a ribbon or piece of yarn through all three layers and typing a knot or you can machine or hand quilt the layers. If you just sew in the cotton stuffing around the edges, the center will tear or shift. There are many sites about quilting to explain all the different ways to finish off the edges. 5x3.5 is a nice size but will not cover a twin bed, but children usually just want something to tote around and snuggle with.
