a modem allows you to connect to the internet through your phoneline(dial up or DSL or cable like for cable) a router then plugs into your modem and allows that one connection to be split up so you can have multiple devices on it for example with a router you can set it up so you have a desktop, a laptop, and an xbox hooked up to the internet in your house.

The confusion is that most things made now are BOTH. So the terms are used synonymously now. Originally modems were used to connect a computer to the phone system ala "dial up" service. Now there are DSL modems and Cable modems which perform a similar function with those types of connection. They also have a "router" built in. A router is any sort of network "traffic cop". So in the case of a DSL modem, the router portion accepts traffic from you computer or local lan and routes it to the internet using the DSL interface (aka the "modem" portion).

A modem will connect you to the internet via your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Normally it will be a DSL, Cable, or Dial-Up. All require a modem to talk to the ISP and make a connection. A router will take that connection, and make it available to multiple computers. Normally a modem can only be assigned one address and be used by one computer. If you use a router on a cable or dsl modem, you can then have it direct traffic from many computers and they can all connect to the ISP. Basically, the modem gets you online, the router lets you talk to other computers connected to it, and connect them all to the modem. Hope that helps!

A modem is the device that allows computers to send data over a phone/cable line.

A router is a device that is used to create a home network. It has a section that assigns IP addresses to computers that connect to it. It also has the ability to connect to modems. Using a router will enable you to connect multiple computers to the internet at the same time.

A Router is a gateway to the internet that "packets" you information. Much to the same as a modem but a router can provide multiple machines to the internet and also can provide a hardware firewall and/or wireless abilities. It usually will use a USB or ethernet port. A modem is usually used for dialup internet. This is usually slower. Runs through a telephone line.

The modem receives the connection. A router is used to share that connection or connect a network.
