what are the differences between a commonwealth and a state?

4 commonwealths in the USA. I am wondering why they are not states like others please some one explain me that

I have lived in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 63 years. I personally don't think there are any differences.

There is no legal difference. 4 states just prefer to be called "commonwealth of ..." in legal proceedings.
