Does anyone know any official sources that say if it's legal or not? I mean, I really don't want to face a fine or go to jail. What is the chance of getting caught?

Thanks!

IF YOU ARE DOWNLOADING COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT...IT IS ILLEGAL.

Chances? What's the difference? It's illegal; you break the law or you obey it.

The actual Limewire software program is legal. What you do with it may or may not be. Sort of like a firearm can be used both legally and illegally.

Downloading anything from there is opening your PC to serious viruses and worms. Is it legal? No, not really

Limewire is legal. Using limewire to download or share music, videos, software etc in a manner that violates the license of those works is illegal.

Limewire is legal. Using limewire to download or share music, videos, software etc in a manner that violates the license of those works is illegal.

Two examples:
1. You like a song and it is sold on a CD. The CD package has all the standard copyright stuff listed. You download or share a copy using limewire. This is illegal.
2. A band has issued a mp3 of a song they own. On their website they say that the song can be freely shared using any method available. You download or share the song using limewire. This is legal as it is allowed by the copyright owner.

It would not be a defense to say "but I thought the copyright owner allowed this".

The record companies are getting pretty aggressive in investigating file sharing and are winning some big cases against some small players. They are not only going after the big time pirates.
