I don't know the answer to your question (sorry) but I feel compelled to respond to the previous poster.

Why is it that people today assume environmental actions are all about global warming? Hell, the current laws don't discuss greenhouse gases at all!! The cover things like smog (and the chemicals that lead to it), groundwater contamination, and other health threats.

In the case of wood burning, the issue is particulate matter from the smoke. Particulates are a serious problem in the LA area and several other places.

That's not true.

What does become illegal on 1/1/08 is to sell a new home with a fireplace that doesn't meet emissions standards designed by the Air Resources Board.

Existing fireplaces can still be used, and new homes can still be built with fireplaces, as long as they're the clean burning type.

Why? Burning wood doesn't contribute to global warming. The carbon is already in the carbon cycle. We should all burn wood instead of oil and gas.
