The only thing I could think of was my social security number card. I don't even know why I need that. I know I needed it to be able to work, but maybe it's so the government can tax me? This generation won't even be able to use social security anyway because the government is doing away with the system so I've heard. Would I need my birth certificate or passport too? What exactly do I need when I move out and go away?

When you move out on your own you need, your
Social Security Card, for employment and taxes.
You need a Governement Issued Picture ID. Like Driver's License or State/Province ID picture.
You need your medical card if you need to go to the Doctors. You need your Birth Certificate.
If you are travelling outside of your country, then a passport would be good to have.

Don't be silly. The government doesn't need you to take your SSN card so they can tax you. Trust me...they'll tax you with or without it. You need it so you can prove your identity for work purposes. You also need your birth certificate. If you have a passport take that too.

It really depends on what you're doing. If you're honestly moving out and going to be a "grown up" then take all those important documents and keep them somewhere safe. If you're only leaving for the semester or something comparable then you're probably safe letting your parents hold onto it for you.

If you're still uncertain, ask them. They'll let you know whether or not you're ready to keep your important documents yourself.

You don't really need the Social Security card for much of anything if you can remember the number (you'll need it when you get hired for a new job). If you have a passport or birth certificate, take those; if you don't have a birth certificate, order a couple of copies from the appropriate bureau of vital statistics. And don't give up altogether on the Social Security system: you won't do nearly as well as you would under a private accounts plan (by a factor of 4 in my case -- I ran the numbers), but you will get something.

You would need your social security card, birth certificate and if you have a passport do take it. I would also recommend shot records and medical records they may have. Maybe school transcripts and your journals or diaries. Take anything private or personal. You really need money when you move or go away. Take anything they will let you take so you do not have to buy it.

You should take with you all of your identification:
1. Your birth certificate
2. Your Social Security Card. You won't get employment without it regardless about how you feel about the future of the Social Security program.
3. Your passport if you have one.
4. Your drivers license if you have one.
