It depends what kind of cards you have. If it's 250 Honus Wagner cards, you have the rest of your life paid for.

As mot people point out, the answer to your question depends on several factors:
1) the year the cards were printed,
2) the players the cards are of
3) the card company that produced the card
4) whether the cards are inserts, short prints, special cards or regular cards.
5) the overall condition of the card
as a general tip, cards prior to 1980, especially those from the 50's and 60's, tend to be worth a little more than post 1980 because kids back then didnt think to save and take care of cards like kids today do. these cards tend to be worth a little more even though if the cards are a little worse in condition.
most cards produced post 1981, when fleer and donruss started printing, where printed in such mass quantities that most cards from the 1980's and 1990's are relatively worthless with a few exceptions. notably, the 1989 upper deck set.
In the 1990's the companies all experimented with premium sets like finest, bowman, chrome bowman's best etc and some of these sets included variant cards (refractors, gold, artist proofs etc.). some of these cards are worth a decent amount of money.
Post 2000, the serial numbered short print took off, so some of these cards are of considerable value, like the 2001 bowman chrome pujols auto, limited to 500.
In the end, there are three really good places to get prices on your cards. the first is Beckett.com, where you can view the cards in an online price guide, however this cost 5 dollars a month. Idea two is head down to the local store and get a copy of beckett magazine. be aware though, that the magazine doesnt really list common cards. last, but not least, my preferred method is to just do an ebay search for the card as this will give you a sense for what the cards are actually selling for. hope this helps.
