For a minute, I thought it was sea-floor but apparently I am wrong.. I really am wondering where they happen

I don't know where most divergent boundaries happen but I know that when two plates diverge, it releases magma from under the Earth the makes land. That is how we got our land today, from all the divergent boundaries!

No you are not wrong. Divergent boundaries occur at spreading centres aka mid ocean ridges.

They also occur at rift zones.

Divergent Plate boundaries are most common with oceanic crustal plates. Lithospheric plates tend to be thinner in the oceans. Hence, closer to the heat source that most commonly drives plate movement.

To understand exactly why this is true, you must understand the process of convection. Convection describes the thermal property common when you boil water. Water heats up on the bottom of the pan first, and rises. Cooler water rushes in and soon heats up and this creates a circular movement of water.

The process of convection also exists in the asthenosphere of the earth's layers. This layer lies directly under the tectonic plates and is the driving force behind the plate tectonics theory.

Divergent plate boundaries exist where the convection activity is intense. The "mid-ocean ridge" spreading center is one of the more recognized divergent plate boundaries. At the Mid-ocean Ridge, the convective activity is the forcing two plates apart and creating the void for "new" crust to form.

Keep in mind that, in order for tectonic plates to "move" away from one another it requires some type of force to push/pull the plate. This could be by convection, but may be caused by a "pulling" from an adjacent plate.
