I am allergic to most fabric softeners, so I just add 1/4 cup baking soda in the wash cycle and 1/4 cup vinegar in the rinse cycle.
My clothes smell clean without added scents.

If you want to use fabric softeners anyways, only use them on clothes you use regularly. Clothes that get stored away (such as holiday linens during the rest of the year) should be free of fabric softener. Fabric softener in clothes can break down the strength of the fibers and the clothes would be worn out before their time.

Downy April Fresh liquid is my current favorite :) I switch things up about 1-2 times a year because I get bored and want to try something new. I used to use Gain Original scent liquid fabric softener exclusively, the scent lasts forever! I was in the mood for a softer more classic scent and the April Fresh is perfect! I want to try Downy Clean Breeze with the blue cap next, but I am really enjoying April Fresh at the moment!

The trick is to use a good smelling detergent. Fabric softeners just cover up the smell of the detergent, anyway.
They are useful to reduce static cling, however.
Try Gain's product line. It will last a long time.
If you're just looking to keep your clothes fresh for the next season, use a sachet (like what they put nuts and candies in at weddings) and fill with bath salts. hang them in your closet or put them in your drawers and the smell will last all season. =)

I'm a big fan of Snuggle Fresh Rain scent. When I let my clothes Air dry after using it they most certainly retain the fresh smell.

I don't use fabric softeners, I use vinegar. My mountain fresh scent laundry soap powder lasts for months after washing, it's a pleasant, fresh smell. (I store my seasonal clothes in the house and some from last spring still smell good.)
