OS/360, which was developed in the 1960's (DOS came much later).

This was the first "Operating System" for computers, and it was the first time a company tried to manufacture a system that would work across an entire platform of machines instead of creating sets of programs for each one by itself.

OS/360 is why the IBM 360 mainframe series became popular.

None of the above.

Operating systems are MUCH older than DOS (or OS/360 for that matter - which I worked with by the way).

The first computers (we'd call them mainframes today, though they didn't back then) were operated by humans (computer operators). Humans were slow, so gradually operating systems were developed so the computer didn't need the human operators.

As with so much in the history of technology similar developments were made by different organisations in different countries. So it's probably impossible to accurately define the FIRST operating system. We can say that the first operating systems emerged in the mid-to late 1950's however.

Its IS true that DOS was the first operating system for the IBM Personal Computer, that was the forerunner of all the Windows-based PC's we use today. The very first flavour of DOS was MS-DOS, developed in 1981 by the newly-formed Microsoft Corp for the IBM-PC.

CTSS -- The Compatible Timeshare System

But distinguish between a Computer OS and a DOS. The early computer command-line programs were terminal base. Later, the micro computers figured out to command the computer through the Disk Drive. This DOS-idea became the economical way to run a computer as a workstation.

Apple DOS, Amiga DOS, Crisscross DOS and much later MS-DOS.
