My fish tank filter killed my three fish in 5 weeks. I cleaned the filter or replaced it every 2 weeks like it said. They still died. I did not feed them too much or too little. I even left the conditioner for the water in as long as it said and the right amount of it too. I did every thing right. When I took the fiter out it was really slimmy and stuff. It sucked up all of the food. It would not filter the water for long because it would get clogged to fast.

The best hang on back power filter in my opinion is aquaclear. I use that on all 4 of my tanks. I don't like other filters because they use cartridges and the carbon is often combined with the mechanical filter. The entire thing is only half and inch thick. With aquaclear, you can use any 3 filter medias you like and EACH one is about 2 inches thick. You can also adjust the water flow during feeding so you don't suck up all the food. Get an aquaclear today!

Well depends how much you want to spend. there are brands named Aqua Tech from Walmart. They are average price. Whispers are okay. Penguin filters are really good but are expensive. Btw- Its not your filter thats wrong. Its what your doing is killing the fish. Do not listen to the filter company as they only want to make $$$ off of you by you purchasing more fitler cartridges. 1 cartridge should last you a year. Leave the cartridge. A tank undergoes a cycle that has to establish good bacteria in order to keep ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels in good condition. What your doing is leaving ammonia (Toxic to fish) in the tank because your filter cant keep the bacteria growing with you putting in a fresh cartridge. If you see your cartridge starting to build up black mucky gunk, Take some OLD tank water from your tank (never rinse it under a tap, it kills off the bacteria), and rinse the cartridge in the old tank water. The old tank water has the bacteria established in there so no bacteria is getting killed that way. Good luck. hope i helped.

It's probably not your filter killing the fish but the water. Do you have a water test kit and have you been checking it daily. Did you remove the chlorine from the water?

My favorites filters are Aqua Clear. They come in different sizes and are very easy to maintain and you can adjust the rate of water flow. When you feed your fish you can reduce the flow until they are done eating so the food doesn't get sucked up into the filter.
