Because there's no democracy there, no free press, and it's a Communist country. So, the IOC decided to award it to Beijing.

Who knows? With the way the world is going, the Olympics may be politically inspired now? Remember the corruption of years before, when countries could buy their way to the top? As with everything else, not enough people complained, screamed or yelled, so they got away with it.
I don't mean to be sexist, but any time you have a bunch of men making decisions, there is usually some power being misused, and funding misspent, and debts incurred beyond reason. The Olympics in the beginning was about sports, and the best of the best. Now, it is about money, and countries that say they have no money for medical coverage, to feed their own people, etc. somehow come up with billions to remake the country for a BUNCH OF SPORTS GAMES. Somehow, the formula for success seems warped! What are the motives and goals of the Olympics? Somewhere it got lost in what the countries think they will make out of the adventure. And then we wait four years and go for it again. And in the meantime, the money spent gives the country new arenas and possible a few new streets or travel conveniences. But the internal woes of the people are still there. China will still have its communism, and the people's rights will continue to be neglected. And we call this Sports. I call it Shame.

It is a communist country but it is not a communist state. The PRC is actually moving towards a modern and market economy. Beijing is an modern metropolitan city. Why shouldn't they get the Olympics
