I have recently recieved a 55 gal. fish tank for Christmas, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what fish I should throw in there. I do not however want to overpopulate it, and I am looking for colorful freshwater fish. I also want the fish to be either good community or semi-aggressive-- no killers!

P.S.: I was also looking to get atleast 1-2 gouramis in there, is there any other species of that fish besides the Dwarf Gourami? Thanks.

Listen to Lisa unless you want to have fishy funerals. Once your tank is cycled then a male betta is a beautiful addition and get him some ornaments and a plant etc. A small tank requires regular water changes to keep the parameters good. We have a 12 gallon tank with filter and heater and perform 15% water changes every week. We use a gravel vac to syphon out all the debris up to 15% and then we dechlorinate the new water and add it to the tank and the correct temperature. Two days after each water change I do a water test to check the PH ammonia and nitrate levels are correct. Never leave uneaten food in your tank as this makes the water deteriorate too fast. We feed and then after 3-5 minutes we scoop out what has not been eaten with a small net. Best of luck.

That is a nice size tank and if you do it right you will have years of fun and wonderment watching tropical fish. Before I'd spent a penny of any fish for my aquarium I would make a trip to a good library as there are many great books on tropical fish. Tropical fish are not cheap and you tanks must be set up just right for your fish to survive in a healthy environment I had many tanks for many years and it was one of the greatest enjoyments I had. Everyone has an idea about how to run and set-up an aquarium to take their right or wrongs out of the picture go and do that research at your library. You may even check out the web. What ever you do have fun with it, I know I did.

Go on line and research what fish are appropriate to mix with gouramis. You could also go to a pet store that sells fish only and ask questions. I was going to suggest for you to get Paco's they are wonderful fish, and i enjoyed them so much when i ha them. I had 3 they were about the size of my pinky finger when we bought them. And in 2yrs they grew to the size of where they were larger than my whole hand. They are semi aggressive because we fed them feeder goldfish, once a month. When my carpet was replaced and we had to put them into a smaller tank overnight to move there tank, in the morning they had all jumped out of the tank and were on the floor. I was heart broken to see Cesar, Napoleon, and Gandhi on the floor dead. But they were a lot of fun, and fish can be very interesting. So my suggestion is for you to do a little research either on line or at a pet store. Good luck, and Happy New Year!

First off, you need to get your tank cycled. Best fish to do that are Danios or goldfish, they are "throw away" fish, cheap and cycle your tank quick. Once you've got your tank cycled, pull the fish out, most places will take them as trade, ask the pet store you purchase them from if they will take them back once this is done.
As far as colorful fish, Cichlids are your best bet. If you get them all the same size, they will live peacefully. Larger ones will kill smaller ones. These fish are semi-aggressive, but very beautiful. Check out Drs. Foster & Smith website, you can see pics of them there under "freshwater fish". Good luck and if you have any more questions I'd be happy to help, just email me.

cichlids but they are sorta aggressive...but they are very colorful and if you only have all cichlids in a tank they are fine. dont listen to the 1st answer...thats saltwater only. these dont usually mix w/ gouramis unless you have gouramis in first then add cichlids but still could pose a problem.

tried to help the best i could not many are very colorful
