Our (new) Australian government is intending to force all ISPs to remove porn and other "unsuitable" material from all Internet service. In order for people to access such material, they would have to register with the ISP, give their details, and then they could get what they liked. I don't like porn and such like, but I do like that the Internet is a free forum for all people, with no censorship except what we place on ourselves.
This is obviously to protect children from predators, but I believe that parents should be doing that job.
What would you feel about your government placing such consorship on the Internet?

The problem with censorship is it is always someone else's values being imposed on you or me or whoever. Personally I have a lot less problem with porn than I do with "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and while I really enjoy George Carlin on network TV I won't watch him on HBO or attend a live show. I spent 22 years in the military and can be just about as foul mouthed as you could imagine but the string of four letter words emitted from his mouth make my ears burn.

My point is, we all censor what we indulge in but my censorship is probably much different than yours. I will take care of myself, you take of yourself and let the government go bother someone committing a crime. This cradle to grave protection of me from myself is getting very bad. In fact, it is bad enough that I can actually say I am glad to be nearing the end of my existence on this planet.

I resent the government telling me what I can and what I cannot read/see/know/
hear/think. As long as I don't break
the law, I should be able to regulate
myself (and my kids if I had any at home.)

What price freedom ? and whom do we regulate to provide who with the pursuit of happiness. Censorship is a nasty word, but by same respects should there be no limit on what can be aired ? (a rhetorical question)

They could take that off anyday and it would not bother me.

I like the idea of having to register with the ISP. I have been told by friends that even doing a search for ''plain'' porn can get some very unsavory results. I have even had some porn pop up when I was doing a google search for something else. It would be great if we did not have to worry about our children having the same thing happen. I am not against adult choosing to look at porn as long as it does not involve minors. Just not on the internet. There are plenty of other places to someone to get there porn besides here.
I usuallly don't like the government interfering in our lives. But there are times when someone needs to take control because so many adults are not capable of making good judgements on their own.

I think it is up to each individual to censor themselves and to watch their own children. I think caution should be observed by all. What I do not want to see, I do not look at. Some Emails I get from some people I just delete because I either do not want to see them or I do not know who has access to someone else's computer. I also think sometimes we try to protect everyone from everything. Caution and vigilance are my guidelines. Can they remove murders and theft and other crimes from the internet by legislation? I think that is just something easy for them to talk about to prove they are earning their salary. I am assuming that some Australian politicians are as full of hot air as some of our American politicians. HAPPY NEW YEAR

I don't know. I've seen it written somewhere that there are more than a million porn sites on the Internet. If true, it must mean 10s, 100s of millions of people are getting their pictures taken while having sex. And some higher number looking at it online.

I honestly don't know what to make of that, don't know what should be done about it, or whether anything should.

But it definitely means something drastic has happened to change the way a lot of people spend their private time.

I think if they tried to censor the internet here in the US, there would be an uprising, the people wouldn't have it. I mean, even if they do do that, the people will find a way around it to do it just like they were. Thats the great thing about humans, if they dont like something, they will find a way to make it work for them.

Just another form of Big Brother looking over your shoulders. They do that , then they do something else, pretty soon everyone wants a revolution because their basic freedoms are disappearing. On one hand I can see it as a good thing, on the other where did your basic freedom of choice go?
