it floats at the top of the tank on its side or gets stuck dead behind a filter

gently poke the betta...also its gills should move if it's alive

Contriversal to what you may have heard, fish only float belly up when there body's begin to decompose and there gasses are realesed causing them to foat. Bettas are sometime nonresponsive in colder water but if they are laying on the ground sideways or floating that is usually because its dead.

If this indeed discribes your poor betta, i am sorry. But dont give up hope if its not dead yet

When you gently touch it and it doesn't move

Grab the tail and see if it wiggles, if not it's dead.

If their gills are not moving at all, that's a pretty reliable indicator. Floating, lying on their sides, and not moving at all when gently prodded can also be tell-tale signs.
