(the 1st time) i have an 80GB HDD w 58.8GB free space, and he has a 60GB HDD w/ 200MB free space. we both have 512MB memory. which do you think is better? (overall)

PS. mine is a toshiba satellite A105-S2051 and his is a dell inspiron 9300.

PS. i plan to upgrade my memory to 2GB. i need help deciding which memory is best. if you would like to help, please answer my other question:

celerons are usually crap compared to pentiums, but celeron Ms are actually pretty good, compared to the pentium Ms-they just have half the pentiums cache.

The processor CPU you chose

Will not effect the speed of you operating system in any way that is worth to even consider

the program you are using determine how fast it can run and how much Rams it needs "IS" what does

The type of CPU you use are made to handle what you demand it to do how many programs it will run. Wal marts stores have multi processor router each has 4 - 500 meg Yes Megabite Processors in the routers to handle the whole east coast store needs.

Check out -- Sun corporation -- they will show you what the Monsters computes use Like AOL You'll be shocked Remember the bigger the number CPU the hotter it will run burn out can happen why else do you think they are making coolers for CPU's.

If your CPU Will be doing multi tasking
get a Gooroo chip and the best fan cooler it will handle do not be stingy It is the heart of the computer if you run a ton of programs on top of each other

CPU will be effected by

what kind of Mobo board-- and video card -- and sound card you link together Check to make sure they will work "GOOD" together not just the work

The best way to see what is "prove-en" is to go to a popular PC maker Alienware -- Microtell -- Dell -- Gateway --- HP And do a custom build see what they use They do not want returns.
-----------------------------------
Speed of boot up can be effected by a lot of things the most common trouble is too much loading when you log on

check msconfig in the run command line

And how long it takes your computer to boot don't mean didley C _ A P

What does is with the program you will be running is what matters not how fast your computer tunes on.

The next is bear min. Ram today you have to have at least a ONE Gig of ram Check cnet what they say are the good ones.

And Yes You Get What You Pay For pay sale price ha ha ha Why if it is a good one something must be wrong with it.

I have 2 gig on mine Maxed out Micro Center -- is my close to home live store.

You can chose any Live store easy returns that way where you live and do a special order they will do it for you.

In closing
The CPU you chose is he likes they don;t buy I think I do Just make sure it has a good replacement policy

Speed of boot with todays computers NEED MAX RAM the total amount your motherboard will recognize Use It Max Ram

You can not go wrong if you keep your mind open for something new

The Pentium line is "extra suited", because of the fact the Celeron line is a funds line. the two are quite previous now because of the fact the middle Duo and middle 2 Duo's are a miles extra more advantageous shape than the two of them.

It's the same crap, most people will not even notice the differance, as long as the computer has the same spec's..

A Celeron is runs cooler and is more efficient than a Pentium. I would recommend cleaning up your fathers hard drive. 200MB of free space to work with is not much. I would install CCleaner and run it. Then go to start, accessories, system, disk cleanup. This program takes forever to run, but it will give you an option box after a while, you can delete some temporary files that CCleaner might have missed and make sure to select the compress old files button. This will compress the files that havent been used in a while but it will free up disk space. Also the file will open as normal.

Celeron is Intel's name for a reduced function (and reduced price) Pentium. Other things being equal, a Pentium is faster. Obviously in this case other things are not equal.

There's a problem on your dad's laptop that needs attention, it's not the processor that's causing it to be so slow.

Pentium M is better its a different type of processor both can be the same speed but M is faster @ processing. As for the booting time all that stuff he needs to reformat his Hard drive and reinstall Windows thats usually what you would do to fix problems, unless you get the software like System mechanic to try and fix any issues it has.

Celeron procs are lower-cost, scaled down versions of Pentiums. However, if it is an older pentium, a newer celeron might be faster.

seeing how your father has filled a 60 gig hard drive, i'd guess his computer is congested with programs, and old. A defragment, and a "spring cleaning" of unused programs would do it good, but at those speeds, he's better off reinstalling windows and starting from scratch.

btw, 512 meg of memory is not enough for XP both of you should definitely upgrade as you say you are.

As for which is better, if you mean which is better right now, i think you answered your own question. if your asking which could perform the best, it's likely the pentium, though, again, i can't judge it unless i know it's speed.
