It could be that your dreams are your escape from your reality.
When all else goes wrong,
Your dreams stay good.
That might be for you to balance the good and the bad in your life.

Your mind is protecting you by not making you relive the horrible things that have happened in your life. I think there are some people that have that survival ability and some others who focus on the past hurts so much that they are very vivid and will take over their lives in sleep and awake hours.

everyone does, you just do not remember it, it is the brains way of working out the days fears, things you have learned and all other experiences, so a nightmare is a dream everone has to have, if you dont, it would mean that you do not exist

Same here. I have lucid dreams and can honestly say I recall my dreams every single night and never ever have nightmares. Perhaps it the outlook you have on either your dreams or life itself. I had a dream where I smashed my head open and watched the blood pour out but I wouldn't say it was a nightmare because I wasn't scared, just witnessed it unemotionally.

u prob do but do not achieve rem sleep. the brain produces theta waves in sleep, which is required for rem sleep, also that is the only time we experience theta waves, infants can experience theta waves without being asleep. which suggests to me that infants are in a dream like state while awake, or they are just on a diff level on consciousness
