Especially among the teenage girls on my college campus. Something to do with the combination of the Northeast accent and that high-pitched, whiny teenage intonation make their voices *incredibly* annoying to the point of torture to me.

Anyone else have this problem ?

A lot of teen girl voices are annoying to me for the same reason, but most adult female voices aren't annoying. Also, there are men and boys with irritating voices too. I think women (especially young ones) are socially conditioned to talk like that. I read that back before feminism, when women were all supposed to be helpless damsels in distress, the average female voice was even higher. That's proof that it has to do with socialization, not just vocal chords.

Annoying Female Voice

2017-01-15 04:41:21 · answer #2 · answered by glassburn 4 · 0 0

I'm noticing a distressing trend (or possibly an age acquired intolerance) in female voices. Am I alone here ? Most of my days are spent with NPR (National Public Radio) in the background in my workspace. Years ago I admired NPRs selection of radio voices. They had a noticeable warmth and comfort that allowed listeners to focus on their amazing content. But lately it seems the selection pool
of voices that replaced the older personalities now includes younger women with nauseating 'singsongy'
endings on nearly every sentence that always ends in a (for lack of a better term) 'nasally' drop in
intonation. While at first I ignored it, I now cannot. I began to question NPR's hiring practices and my own intolerance. Was I making something of nothing ? Was this an isolated or manufactured personal
problem ? Then I began noticing this same vocal change in responders to call-in programs and various experts used in their programing. I may be forced to become informationally challenged by resorting to
background music all day. Any comments out there ?

I like women. I like the sound of a woman's voice - if its a nice sounding voice.

only that high pitched scream where it's almost like their trying to break glass...

I understand if someone is trying to rape them or something but its not called for everytime they get remotely excited...

High pitched - yes! But there are plenty of women with "not annoying" voices. Just look at your typical news anchor/reporter.

Luckily my wife has a soothing voice and not abrasive.

(Remember that some men's voices are irritating as well - really, would you want to live with Chris Rock?)
