My chimney pulled away from the wall and now theres a triangular gap where the fireplace is. How do I fill it with insulation? the gap in the lower part is small.

If your chimney has pulled away from the wall, then you have issues other than trying to seal the gap. You need to figure out why it happened in the first place. This might be like tring to plug a dam with a piece of gum from the out side. Call a fireplace company or talk to a stone/brick mason about it.

You may be able to use a flame sealant. I have never used this around a fireplace but looking at the characteristics you may be able to use Gardner's FlameStopper 5000 Flexible Intumescent Sealant. I have used this on an addition to my house, and so far, knock-on-wood, no problems. Although I haven't seen it in action yet.

i would stuff backer rod in there and caulk it...thats round 1/2 in. foam strips...
