According to High Times and other sources, both the 420 "Drug use in progress" cop story and the burning point temperature story are bogus.

The term "4:20" supposedly originated with a group of students at San Rafael High School in California. These students, who called themselves and each other "Waldo", would cut class to meet up at 4:20 pm to smoke pot. They became known as the "4:20 Waldos" and the term 4:20 slowly came to mean the action of smoking marijuana because of it.

The rest of the stories came from bullshitters and slowly expanded into public belief.

no, actually 420 derrived back durring the big drug era --- 420 was the cop-code for posession, which became the slang term for stoners and pot heads which just caught on in the subculture and stuck, now the code 420 is no longer in use in a lot of states and regions, but the slang term is now stuck to the culture

It's a reference to the time people smoke up. It always seems to be 20 after something when you light up!
