All right, here's the story. I'm a 16 year old girl, born and raised in the Bronx,New York. About 3 months ago, I moved to Nova Scotia,Canada..I doubt ya'll have even heard of it! So, this girl was askin me if I was scared of this guy in NS and all this garbage and I replied, "I'm from the Bronx NY, I've seen it all, he doesn't scare me"...She laughed and said, "Where's you're from has nothing to do with it."...That remark right there was the epitome of disrespect to me. Everyone in Ns thinks they're so tough. They right rap songs talking about how you better not step on their turf or they'll "blow ur brains out" and all this shyt. I'm from the BX, but I never brag. I've seen death firsthand there, and I never wanna go back. It's just disrepectful that they would insinuate NS being even half as bad as the Bronx.
What do u think of what that girl said and this situation in general?

At 16 I doubt that you have seen it all.
At 63, I sure haven't.

I have seen plenty of death, people murdered
Buried lots of mates of my age, dead from stress, overwork.

Tell me your from Darfur, I might think you have had a tough time.

Respect is something to be earned with the respect you give others, or the service you have given your community.

Just because your mother was residing in a particular part of the planet does not earn you any respect, it rather gives you more responsibility to use the greater level of opportunities you have been given to use them more usefully.

She's right...

Where you're from is irrelevant. That you've "seen it all" is irrelevant.

What is relevant is whether or not you have any reason to fear him, and whether or not he realises that his act isn't cutting it with you. What is relevant is what you have personally endured.

Thirty years ago, if you said you were from Yugoslavia, no one would have batted an eye. Ten years later...

Besides...even people from the Bronx get scared. In any case, where you're from doesn't make you immune to some one else's stupidity or insanity...Look at Colombine...look at Ecol Polytechnique...etc.

Where you are from is irrelevant. Whether the guy is a legitimate threat or nor is what is relevant.

Incidentally. If you keep looking down on the Blue Nosers because you're from New York...you're going to shortly find that no one wants to be around you.

As for not knowing where one of the longest continually (European) settled areas in North America is? Sorry, unlike in the US educational systems, we learn ALOT more than the names of the 50 states in our Geography and History classes here.

Besides...if you want to pile-up "Bad Places"...

You honestly think that the Bronx has anywhere near the hazard level as, oh, say Kosovo? Belgrade? Beruit? Darfur? Kandahar or Kabul? East Timor? Belfast?
In Belgrade, at the height of the civil war, attempting to cross the main street for water, food, or medical assistance was at the risk of your life (it was called "Sniper Alley" for a darn good reason!).
Darfur? Well, you've seen the news coverage in the last two years...
Belfast? Lovely little city, but you there were terror attacks at freakin' funerals! Bombs were a weekly, sometimes DAILY occurrence!

In short, no your new friend was NOT putting you down for coming from the Bronx. She was not denigrating the fact that you have probably been the victim of atleast one violent crime, and innumerable non-violent ones. What she's trying to tell you (and you're blowing off), is that there is people to watch-out for everywhere in the world, and that just because the "Idyllic and Picturesque Paradise" known as Nova Scotia (New Scotland, if you were curious) seems peaceful and safe, that there aren't serpents in to be wary of.

In any case...now that my rant is over...
Nova Scotia is a lovely place to live. Lots of history - some of it dating back 500 years or more, (generally) friendly people, and an economy that looks to begin booming (to match the Real Estate Market) in the next few years, once the Off-Shore Platforms start striking! Your folks chose one of the 3 most beautiful (4 if you believe Quebec's claims! ;) ) provinces to live in (PEI and BC being the other two!). Enjoy it, and just think...in 6-7 months, you'll be able to enjoy a reasonably priced lobster dinner in almost any small town every weekend!

Nova Scotia Canada? Baybee, they are just livin' a fantasy, it's just a fad for them to simulate gangsta rap and pretend they are so badass, trust and believe, they don't really wanna know what "Street Certified" really is, the fact that you lived it is testimony enough, just laugh at the immaturity, let it roll off, thank God you're in a better, much safer place, those kids just don't know how good they've got it, they are bored, and may end up doing drugs, or some other craziness, just to prove a point! take advantage of your new life, and live life to the fullest, you are a young woman now, focus on your future, soon you will be on your own, depending on yourself, who cares who's the baddest? You will be superbad, when you start thinking on a more mature level than they are, take full advantage of all your opportunities, now, that's game, for real!

Well, what she said is true. It doesn't matter where you're from. You don't have to be from the hood to go hard. 'Cause if you're from the hood you already know not everyone in the hood goes hard. I'm from D.C. and I've never been to NS. But Canada in general doesn't have much on the U.S. We have way more crime than they do.
Now she shouldn't be bragging about that type of stuff, that's kinda lame. 'Cause I know that I didn't even realize that my area was all that bad until I moved away. Everything I experience I always thought is was normal.
But if she still wanna fake. You should knock her @ss out. Canada calls a neighborhood where you might get robbed a bad area. lol she's trying to put Canada on the map.

I think the girl is right. A person can be from where ever they are from in the world the toughest part and still be a punk. A geographic location doesn't mean anything. A geographic location can not define what a person does and reacts in certain situations. I don't think she was trying to down talk you (with out hearing her tone of voice) I just feel like she was speaking fact. As far as Nova Scotia yes I have heard of it, but people will be people and a lot of times they just want to fit in. What they do they may think that they are imitating hip-hop and that is their problem. Don't take hold of that and don't let it effect your daily routine or thoughts. Just be you.
*~ God Bless~*

Ive never seen death, but ive seen some pretty bad things myself, im from a rougher (not he roughest) houston texas, and your right it isnt anything to brag about and i commend you on that! I can see how your upset about being disrespected, but you need to let it go, and study. study. study. If you dont want to be surrounded by wanna-be-gansta's get an education, even if its not college. get a trade, learn to weld, drive a big-truck, become a skydiving instructor. What im saying is dont get stuck on who steps on who's toes and focus on the important stuff, maintaing family relationships, and your future.

If you want to prove her wrong then compare the statistics on the crime rate between the two places. They are not hard to find. On another note though, every place has dangerous areas, why would anyone feel the need to boast about it?

shes right where you are from has nothing to do with it. its how you learned to adapt to the environment. she didnt mean to offend you but remember you are in another country and theryre culture is very different. like in the south where i am from people from the north seen to be very defensive to me at times, not all of them, just the ones that have "seen it all and heard it all " i am from virginia beach, and get called the "white girl" all the time but i an 16-0 when it comes to people sleeping on me and testing me. do ya thing girl just remember people wouldnt realize how strong you were if they didnt have weaklings to compare you to. spare her, its just culture shock for ya. the beach is just as hard as the bronx, theyre crime rate in canado is low as north dakota, you cant expect them to understand

Ahh youngsters. Let me tell you.....who cares. Grade school was the hardest time of my life. So many egos. When you get out of school none of that is going to matter. Don't pay attention to them. I moved to Florida and the people her talk about being to gangster and they live in gated communities for heaven sake.
