Hi. Sounds like your taskbar has been expanded. Right click on the taskbar, unlock it. Use your cursor to shrink the taskbar (thinner) the lock it. Now the day and date should be side by side. If you like this look, keep it. The day will only display when you hover over it.

I had this problem a while back, it was an easy fix. I have Vista, but Hopefully this can work for you as well. Right click on an empty space on your Taskbar. Put your mouse on "Toolbars", on the menu, Find and Click to uncheck "Quick Launch". Your Quick Launch Icons should Disappear and the taskbar should shrink back to showing only the time. Now you can get your Quick Launch Icons back by putting your mouse on "Toolbars" from the menu Click to check Quick launch and all your Quick Launch Icons will reappear.

Hope this works for you.

Start - Control Panel - Regional and Language Options.

Look at the settings for the time, and change as needed to display how you want.

right click on the bar, and uncheck lock the taskbar. then go to the top of the taskbar, hold, and move it down. if you would like a self-disappearing one, right click on the taskbar, press properties, and check auto-hide the taskbar. then press OK.
