The word OLD is relative. The oldest of the three desktop PCs in my home is Pentium 3 and has migrated from Windows 98 to Windows Me and on to Windows XP. I use it mainly for software development and it is still going strong. The main issue is availability of disk space and memory size. If you specify processor type, disk space and memory size, it will be easier to give better opinion. Ride on.

I know a lot of people will say dump it becasue 98 is old and becoming out dated. However 98 has DOS files you can't get with XP or Vista and they tend to be useful working on computers. It is a very nice guesture to give it to your parents and if they have the cd for lotus, there shouldn't be any problem loading the Lotus program.
It's probably not worth the time or effort to upgrade to XP if the computer is beyond five years old. Or worth the cost of changing some hard ware devices.

You can try formatting the HD and Put Win2kPro on it for your parents, or you can with free software use it a as a firewall, or donate it to a church or community center. There are lots of people out there that can't buy a new computer even if they are around $350.00.
Check with the Salvation Army or ask your children to see if any of their friends in their school could use it.
Whatever you decide, make sure you format the HD and install whatever version of Windows you can to prevent old files to be left behind.

Depending how old your pc is, Windows XP could lose a lot of the exisitng drivers that make your current graphics and audio work.
I dont think 98 can be upgraded to XP as XP recognises NTFS formatting of the hard drive as opposed to fat32. So the hard drive would need to be fdisked first. (del the partitions )
Also it's quite possible that your old pc may not have enough RAM to operate XP .. so you're looking at expense ... only you know if it's worth it.. but I guess upgrades are cheap.. so it's not a forgone conclusion.
As for copying the operating system ...you'll need a disk if the pc will be used online, although many second hand pc's are supplied pre-installed and people use them obliviously...the risk is yours.
But, by no means should you bin it .. recycle, give it to a school or one of your mate's kids or something.
Hope my pointers help you make the right choices.

It would probably benefit you in the long run to junk it and take this opportunity to invest in a new computer. If your pressed for money, i would recommend microspectpc.com. They offer a variety of options starting at $350.
If you choose to upgrade to XP you can get it for $100 on newegg.com. But most likely your computer will require additional upgrades to support XP and in that case it wouldn't be worth it.
Good Luck!

XP requires more memory and a faster processor so I would give your Win 98 PC to your parents and buy a nice new PC with XP or Vista. New PCs with high specs are cheaper than you think.
You can connect both computers together and create a network by mapping a network drive then you can move as much data as required.

Your hardware's no good for XP. You might be able to transfer stuff back and forth between 95, and 98, but you really need better hardware for anything newer.
When you do finally get something newer though, zero-out your harddrive(there's software for it...erases ALL your old data) on the old system and give it to charity.

Your old rig is likely too slow to use xp very well, or at all. You can transfer files between different operating systems without a hitch, as far as I know.
