The nominees will officially be nominated and confirmed at the conventions in Aug/Sep. We will know who they will be long before that (likely Feb-Mar)

I think all the caucus's will be done in August I think (or September). The Iowa caucus is like next week and it's the first. New Hampshire is close to it (maybe even the same day). Whoever wins the Iowa/NH caucus's historically have taken the lead in other caucus's and get the nomination but it's not official.

The way it's supposed to work is that each party selects its candidate at its convention, based on the votes they got in all the primaries.
But our system has become corrupt. Today, whichever candidate comes into the race with the most money is immediately declared by the media to be the presumptive winner. All the news then treats the field of candidates as 'winner' and 'also-rans'. When the convention finally arrives, it is no more than an 'infomercial', a week-long advertisement for the party. Party conventions used to be big news events, they were covered 'gavel to gavel', but these days they are only lightly covered because they are no longer news.
The problem this year is that neither party has a clear winner. The election season started earlier than ever before, in the previous year! All the candidates, of both parties, are seriously flawed. The voters haven't really fallen in love with any of them. It's like a horse race where all the horses are lame.
I would say both parties will probably have a clear leader by June or July of '08. At this point it looks like Giuliani and Hillary, but it's way too early to tell. They are the front-runners only because they've raised the most money so far. Since those two are the front-runners, the media will be focussing on them and any little mistake either of them makes will be magnified, so it will be their job to be non-committal, to answer questions without actually saying anything, just not to make any big mistakes.
