My son is 8. This year he's gonna be at home (unlike usually staying with nana & papa and hanging with the cousins).

I'd like to start our own traditions, since he'll probably be at home more during the holidays since we don't live so close to family anymore.

What are some things your family does at home? Or when you were growing up, what did your parents do to make New Years interesting for you?

Staying up that late was a major big deal.

And the half-glass of champaign I got to drink.

We didn't really have any traditions.

One year some friends of my older siblings were over and one (that I had a major crush on) taught me to dance.

Ideas: make some chex mix (when you do it using the oven, it takes longer, and needs tending -- but it tastes much better than the already-made packages). Then make some cookies.

Listen to music or watch holiday movies.

Talk about the past year, what were the biggest things that happened, and the best and the worst things. (All this time together, at the year's end, would be a good time to reflect, and share your thoughts and feelings with each other.)

We like to play board games, drink (sparkling juice for the kids, champagne for the adults) and eat party food, all our favorite appetizers, and mini creme puffs for dessert. At midnight we blow bubbles and noisemakers, kiss and hug all around.

Then we get up in the morning, turn on the Rose Parade, and eat leftover party food for breakfast along with coffee and sweet rolls... so we basically get up and continue the party right along :-)

I remember my first New Years that I got to stay up tilll midnight. I was about your sons age.

Me and my brother made a sighn that said Happy New Year!!! and we made confetti out of colored paper all day. Then right before midnight we hid behind the sofa that our parents were sitting on and we counted down 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 then we jumped up, shouted Happy New Year and threw the confetti in the air. My mom mixed some grape juice and ginger ail and poured it in wine glasses and we toasted to good luck for the new year.

I mostly remember just being with my family and being loved.
And being allowed to stay up till midnight.
