In one revolution the wheel has rolled a distance equal to it's circumference, given by:

16*π inches

So the total number of revolutions is:

(5280*12 inches) / (16*π inches per revolution) = 3960/π ≈ 1260.51 revolutions

Since there seems to be a lot of confusion, I'll second the answer of 1260.5 revolutions, with a few important assumptions.

Wheel measurements are commonly referring to the diameter of the rim. For the purposes of this problem, I will assume that 16 inches refers to the diameter of the entire wheel (from the axle to the outer surface that contacts the pavement).

So the circumference of the tire is

2*pi*radius = 16*pi inches

since the radius is 8 inches.

Converting this to feet, we have 12 inches per foot, so

(16*pi inches)*(1 foot)/(12 inches) = (16/12)*pi feet = (4/3)*pi feet

This is the total distance the wheel travels in one revolution (since at the end of a revolution, every spot on the circumference of the tire has touched the pavement).

So we have (4/3)*pi feet per revolution

A mile has 5280 feet.

We now solve the equation:

(feet per revolution)*(# of revolutions) = 5280 feet

So

(# of revolutions) = 5280/((4/3)*pi)) = 1260.5

1260 rev per mile on a wheel with an outside diameter of 16 inches using 22/7 for pi

Do you mean 16" diameter?
Circumference is Pi D, 3.14*16/12 to convert to feet.
One mile is 1760 yards, times 3 to convert to feet.
So: (1760*3)/(3.14*16/12)
5280/4.19 = 1261.3 times

The dia. is 16 in so the circumference is Pi times
16in or 50.26 in. or 4.19ft. A mile is 5280ft so 5280/4.19 = 1269.14 rev /mile
sorry 5280/4.19 = 1260.14 rev/mile

1 Mile = 5280 Feet

mult 5280 x 12 = a lime in inches

then div that by 16 (1 rev of the wheel)

good luck
