I use these free programs that cover everything.
AVG
ZoneAlarm
Adaware
They were recommended by someone on here, and i have not looked back since.
Norton Anti Virus is crap
Windows Live One Care is very easy to use, but i got suspicious when it never found anything. I deleted it and downloaded the three i listed above, and i did a scan. I found 11 viruses and other crazy stuff.

I have used AVG and have had a very positive experience with it, and it is indeed still free.
One I am going to try next is ClamWin.
It is open source and free, and has all the features of a paid version of anti-virus software.

Good Luck

Go here and check out the best FREE programs. You can read the publishers, editors, and user comments about it.
http://www.download.com
The two highest ranking FREE antivirus programs are AVG and Avast.
I use AVG and have been using it for about 1 1/2 years now. I would recommend it to you anytime. I've never installed and used Avast, so I have no opinion on it.
Hope this helps.

To to google.com and search for Live OneCare one the best antivirus software made by Microsoft. They are 99 days free trial or 90 days?I dont remember but either of two. Maybe 90+ days is enough for you to get a New antivirus software.

Unfortuately, there are too many "free" programs that say they are designed to stop viruses that CAUSE them or add spyware/adware to your system. Stay off questionable sites like Limeware and adult content sites and follow safe computing practices until you can get the real deal.
The Av site itself triggered a number of runtime errors that throw doubt on the company's ability to judge anything.
