I don't know if this will make you feel more like an adult, or just more like a mom but it's what my parents always did when I was a kid and it's what my husband and I will be doing tonight as well. I loved it as a kid and I enjoy it now.
We threw/throw the cheesiest party ever. We have all the appetizers - sausage balls, little smoked sausages (beanie weanies), ritz crackers and cheese whiz, nows the time to open that hickory farms sampler you got for Christmas, you get the picture. Alcohol for mom and dad, kids can have sparkling cider, shirley temples, or whatever else they might like that would be special. We play stupid games like charades, balderdash, or board games like Clue and Candyland for younger people. But you basically party down in the silliest way possible and it's actually fun. If you've got extra people like Grandma's and Aunts then the more the merrier, but we have always done this with just mom, dad and a kid or two. Just cause you aren't all dressed up and surrounded by interesting adults doesn't mean you can't have a wild party.

I did this a few years ago: New Years Party starts at 7 PM, then my kids will have to be in bed like 9 PM. That way its the Adults turn to have some fun. I am not an Alcoholic, but not having those kind of Beverages especially on New Years is kinda bland dont you think? But then again its your House its your rules. For food, stay with the Kids basic favorites: 1.) Chicken Nuggets - Buy them Frozen by the Bag at your local Grocery Store 2.) French Fries - Enjoyed by kids and Adults alike. 3.) Mac and Cheese - Definitely a Child favorite. You catch my drift right? As with the Adults, just go to your local Deli and ask what kind of Platter do they have for the Holidays. I got myself last year a whole platter of Ham and Cheese Sandwhich which is everyone's delight. And a Shrimp Cocktail Platter, and IF the weather is not that bad, who knows, turn up your BBQ Grill for a BBQ Party! Hope this helps.

Be thankful that you have to healthy, happy children. Plenty of people lose their kids every day to drunk drivers, illness, etc. New Year's Eve is no different than any other "party" night...stay home, be safe, and count your blessings! There are too many drunks out on the roads tonight...

I'm in the same boat...so I decided to take the kids to my brother's house for New Year's Eve. That way they can play with their cousins, and after they are asleep all the adults can have a few drinks, and no one has to worry about driving drunk.
Why don't you do something with the kids early on, put them to bed, and have "adult time" after they are asleep?
You don't have to go out to have a good time.

My kids are 13 and 10 and can stay home alone. My wife and I are going to some neighbors which is adult only. I really don't want to go precisely because my kids can't go! Funny how our situations are so different.
Anyway, one trick we used to do was to ask the kids to make the New Year's decorations. Posters, pictures etc. They would do it for hours. It was cute when it finally got close to midnight to see all the things they made. In the meantime, we had plenty of adult time. Good luck.

my opinion is that if you refuse to hire a sitter and go out with other adults the you should get some sparkling cider to drink at midnight and have some fun games lined out to play that would be good for kids and adults. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS YOU AND I HOPE YOU HAVE A VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR.!!!!!and by the way i think it is really awesome that you are putting your kids first, that's what we are doing!

I don't know, but if you get some good ideas, I would love to hear them. My hubby and I are spending out first MARRIED New Year together and Our 2nd together as a family. We each have 2 children (3 girls one boy... 9,8,6,5) and 1 on the way, so I was hoping we would spend our last one together before we have or own child, but both of the exes made plans (not together this year, although last year THEY were a couple), and were planning on DUMPING kids lord knows where if we didn't take them. We couldn't accept their irresponsibile choices, but I too am disappointed this New Years Eve.
