I'm looking at either the Epiphone or a cheaper Fender. Does anyone have any experience/advice? I have played violin for 12 and would like to add an acoustic-electric mandolin to my arsenal (the electric sound is more important). Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Get a good quality used one, and you might want to consider spending a little more money because I think that's a little too low of a price to get a quality instrument... unless you just get a really good deal somewhere.

right this is the 'checklist': Alvarez; paintings & Lutherie; Cort; Dean; Epiphone; Ibanez; Jazmine; Johnson; Lag; Seagull; Takamine ($$); Tanglewood; Walden; Washburn and Yamaha. stable, no longer cost effectively made. purely an extremely few would be a 50-50 proposition in the tip, once you look them over actual nicely. assume to pay from $one hundred twenty five - $seven-hundred (relatively) while you're severe approximately being a participant on your guy or woman and get exhilaration from merely the surprising tool on your taking part in convenience and of its average overall performance. As you will desire to attempt all of them out bodily to locate what the opportunities are, and what you're prepared to pay for what you extremely are waiting for in this budget. you may continually negotiate a cost you may ultimately cope with in the tip.

Go to SAM ASH DOT COM and get the toll-free number. They will connect you with a guitar/banjo tech who can answer some questions. The Epiphone ones are very good, though.

I had a Fender A style and was very happy with it. Stay away from those cheapy brands like Rogue. Good luck. Also I highly recommend Roland White's mandolin book. You should pick it up very easily with a violin background.
