Yes, and more often than not being an exhibit in a "freak show " was the only employment these unfortunate people could secure in those less enlightened times. Some "freaks"
from PT Barnum's sideshow went on to become wealthy and world famous celebrities.

One thing I taught my children at a very early age was that God does not make "mistakes". The Bible teaches us that the poor and the unfortunate will always be among us. I believe the less fortunate are here to measure our compassion, understanding, and charity towards others.
It hurts me to hear people call anyone a "freak". Who is to judge what is abnormal and what isnt?
I have a friend, she is 26, who has neurofibromatosis (sp?) known to those who have failed Gods test as "elephant man's disease".
She has to have surgery constantly to remove tumours from her brain and organs. She has had several removed from her arms and legs. So far she has been fortunate in that she has not become disfigured from it.
She is one of the most cheerful, positive, "sunniest" people I know and when she complete her education will be working with autistic children.
She at least, is doing something good with her life despite the burdens placed on her and I am sure that God has a special place in heaven reserved for her.
In the meantime because of her a lot of children's lives will be changed for the better.
I believe a true "freak" is determined by what is in your heart, not what is on the outside. Make fun of a person's appearance or burdens and you make fun of and find fault with God's work. These are human beings created by God.
Hollywood seems to be producing one freak after another who strangely, far too many people seem to see as icons in our society, yet their behavior is truly strange and "freakish" IMO.

Yes, the alligator girl, pop-eye, 1100 lb man, etc. Some of those individuals were victims of either nature or circumstance but, are people regardless. I recall an episode of the Twilight Zone with Donna Douglas (Elly Mae Clampett) as the "freak". Recalling this I wonder what it might be like for those people, how we might feel if the situation were reversed and we were the freaks in their world. Could that be why you asked this question?

I never went to one, but over the last few seasons I really enjoyed watching "Carnivale" on the television. It made you realise what life was like for them as they moved around the country doing their shows. The storyline was pretty "dark" but I loved the show ! The actors were real "freaks" who, I believe, live together in a town in the US where they can live their lives without outsiders prying into their privacy.
