It's an area in central Greece. The name means "high in the air," or, some would have it, "suspended in the air." It's high in the mountains among the cliffs.

It seems that the place has derived its name from the word 'meteor' which means a piece of rock or metal that burns very brightly when it enters the earth's atmosphere from space.
