I want to find out how much money it will cost [in gas ] to drive 20.22 miles exactly. That is going one way, so I need to know how much it will cost both ways, with the gas price being ( at the highest ) $ 3.35.

So gas price: $ 3.35
Distance: 20.22 Miles One Way
Distance: 40.44 Miles Both Ways

How much will it cost to go to this place in all?

I really don't know how to do this and it has nothing to do with math homework. I need to find the price to volunteer at an animal shelter every weekend to see if I can afford to pay the person driving me.

You need to know the mileage rate for the car, i.e., how many miles per gallon the car gets.

Once you know the miles per gallon X, you can calculate the cost of the trip:
Cost = 40.44 mi ÷ (X mi/gal) · (3.35$/gal)

The driver may be able to claim the trip as a charitable contribution, but the allowance per mile doesn't come near to the cost of the gasoline plus wear-and-tear on the car.

The driver should be negotiating the price with you. Could be free! Bus route going that way and back? Monthly pass is how much in your area?

Well, the price 3.35 is the price in gallons. you have to find out how many gallons your car takes up in the whole trip, and then multiply by 3.35.

You're missing a critical piece of information. How many miles can the vehicle go on 1 gallon of gas? Once you know, compute:
40.44 miles divided by x miles per gallon = y gallons
y gallons times $3.35 per gallon = $z.
