Hanging stockings is an old Christmas tradition. Santa fills them with candy and small gifts.

Yes, it's odd. I'm American but here in Norway, where I now live, Christmas gifts are given and opened on Christmas Eve. People are usually well-dressed when opening their gifts contrary to the American way of waiting until Christmas morning, when everyone still has their pj's on with messy hair. I don't think all have stockings over here, we do, but we aren't sitting in our underwear while we eat candy out of them.
