According to records and testimony that came to light after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Soviets recovered the charred corpse (staffers at the Fuhrerbunker had doused both Hitler and Eva Braun's bodies with gas and set them alight in outside the complex, as the had done with the bodies of Josef and Magda Goebbels) shortly after Berlin fell to them in May 1945. They did a comprehensive autopsy in Moscow and kept the remains stored away for years, while spreading rumors that he had escaped to South America. Eventualy, the remains were buried in an unmarked grave sometime in the 1970's.

Hitler's corpse as well as the body of his one-day bride Eva Braun were taken outside, doused with gasoline, and set on fire.

The two of them committed suicide so that they wouldn't be caught by the Soviets who were closing in on Berlin in the final days of the European Theater.
