Things change weekly and monthly. Some of us don't have enough to make it monthly much less save. Will you if possible?
Will you stop some of the frivolous help you give family and friends to help them or force them to be more responsible?
I have 2 leaving the nest in the next 3-4 months. One will be getting birthday and wedding money not for a party but towards a house downpayment-her choice. The other is going back on her own after getting her debts all paid off by living at home for almost 2 yrs.
We've got two mothers to be ready with cribs etc. Now we intend to save more once again. Plus replace some things we are donating to the kids to help them be more comfortable.
We think it is time to let them fly and take a giant step back. have you all ready done tis or do you plan on it?

I will not be giving my children anything any more in the way of help. Both are now married and it was take take take until they got married. One is still trying to take but I am done with that. At some point we have to stop giving so they will become independent! So that is what I am doing. Plus the attitude of the son-in-law and daughter -in-law is such that I wouldn't count on either of my children if I get into trouble financially as I would never hear the end of it. SO I am all about saving a little each month this next year and then investing it the following year. Also I consider my home an investment so I am trying to fix it up, I have a roommate who will do work for me in return for no rent so that is great. It sounds to me like you have gone above and beyond for your kids like I did. So my answer is...it is time for you & Hubby to think about yourselves and YOUR future!! Mine will get a card for birthdays and a small present for Christmas...the freebies are done! Honestly I think they will be fine with it as they don't want to have to worry about taking care of me later in life. Sad but true, bu then again they are a lot like many kids of their generation...they are 26 and 28 and just go married, both of them in the last 4 months.

We have been able to meet all of our bills and pay off the car loan. Hoping to move a new home in here in the summer. Something that we will be able to move farther south when we retire.

I scrimp for every penny, and if I do manage to save anything it usually goes toward food at the end of the month.
