well, from the looks of tim thomas getting beat like a rented goalie in the last couple of games, during shootouts and a penalty shot, i'd say it's best to stay upright as long as possible. then drop like you were shot if the puck doesn't come up high.

Most goalies in the NHL are butterfly goalies, which means they drop to their knees to make a save most of the time. Butterfly is pretty much the most efficient way of goaltending. So most of the time, yes you do drop to your knees to make the save. Of course if you see the shot clearly, you can just make the save standing up (like just catch it standing up), but a lot of times those shots go low, so you MUST go down in order to control the rebound.

If a player is 5 ft. away from the net getting ready to shoot, yes you have to go down or else he'll just put through your 5-hole. If a player is at around the blue line and you are screened, but you know that he's gonna shoot, go down. Going down is usually the safest thing to do.

OK, I have just realized that pretty much everything I said has a sexual meaning as well. rofl, everything I said above concerns hockey and hockey only. Not sex. Hockey. xD

Well, it depends. If it is a deker, you wanna stay on your feet and then go down. If it is like a slapshoter stay up..

Stay on your feet and prevent the shot from going "5" hole (NHL style that is).

Definately a good idea to go down a lot. Remember, do a favour and the favour will almost always be returned :) There are some exceptions though. Don't be afraid to trim those hedges, they can be deceiving. If you see little things crawling down there, back off before you gag yourself. Remember only go down for 24 days then take a week or so off.
