It was a somewhat violent horror movie, if you're OK with that then it was great. Unlike most modern slasher flicks, this one focused on a somewhat dysfunctional family that you came to know and love. You cared about the characters and wanted them to succeed.

The monster was also much more front and center, and visible, than most monsters in horror movies. You saw it pretty quickly, and they didn't hide it from you.

This movie had a lot of heart, which made the death and violence much more painful and trying, which is a good thing. Most American horror movies numb you with ever more bloody and disgusting violence, and you end up feeling kind of filthy by the end of it. The Host wasn't like that at all. The monster was horrible, but understandable, and the family fighting against it (and against other problems) was fighting for all of the right reasons.

Definitely recommended for horror movie fans.

I loved The Host and I don't care that much for horror. I thought it was very funny and creative and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind subtitles. The odd ball family is what makes the film, not the monster.
