My suggestion that has worked for everything, is the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Those are my sanity savers.

Comet or Barkeepers friend ( a low abrasive) both will remove marker - but if the surface scratches easily use the barkeepers friend for best results.

If your desk has been polished with BOSTON wax, don't use wax paper and a hot Iron. This only works on crayon or wax based marks like shoe polish. This is old fashioned but it works , white vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda. A half cup of vinegar a half cup of lemon juice and two table spoons of baking soda. A soft cloth. Rub on stain with circular motion.

I would try denatured alcohol first. If that did not work , try acetone. But try both in a small unseen(?) area first to see if it will harm the finnish. You can buy both of those at any paint store. The only color that may not come off is red.
