Verbal abuse is a form of psychological abuse and is the worst kind of abuse to endure for long periods of time. Physical abuse is horrible in its own right but we seem to absorb the physical abuse better without lingering effects unless of course the abuse is too severe and causes major bodily harm. We seem to never heal from the the verbal abuse and this makes it worse in my opinion. Using verbal abuse to control another may not always be intentional but the effect is the same. For a man to verbally abuse a woman he has swore to love and protect is the lowest of low. His own insecurities and short comings are turned in fits of rage that seem to be quieted by controlling the thoughts and habits of others. It is empowering for the man to be in control and even addicting. That is why I believe if a man is abusive to a woman, either physically or mentally there is little chance of him changing his ways without therapy and understanding of his own problems. Knowledge of ones self is really underrated in today's society, especially by men. Men still have a John Wayne stereotype to adhere to when it comes to knowing themselves. Most men will never explore themselves emotionally out of fear of being labeled gay. Homophobia also limits men's lives in other ways. When men learn more about themselves, their fears, their needs, their wants, and desires, they are better men and can assume a role as the caregiver they promised to be.

I agree, Merlin, that verbal abuse is worse than physical abuse. It is not just a verbal abuse, but also a mental and emotional abuse.
Unfortunately, many parents use verbal abuse, as well as "educators", doctors, and most particularly, bosses.
Too bad every one can't just leave people alone.
Let's do away with the wolf pack syndrome of people!

I think that it hurts more because you remember the rude, mean comments that other people make. Its called bruises on the brain and you continue to remember them for years to come.
